Auckland to Rotorua Private Luxury ToursOur Auckland to Rotorua Private Luxury Full Day Tours begin at a time suitable for you (we suggest around 8am), when we collect you in our air-conditioned luxury vehicle from your Auckland accommodation.
Auckland to Rotorua Private Tour – Full Day – Highlights: the three hour drive south-east takes us into the rich, rolling farmland of the Waikato region. Our first stop is at Matamata, the quiet dairy town which shot to stardom as Hobbiton in Peter Jackson’s famous film, Lord of the Rings. The Hobbiton sign in the town centre offers a wonderful photo opportunity. “Hobbiton Tours”, of the village and countryside which featured in the film, are also available. However, while we are happy to book one for you on your Auckland to Rotorua Private Full Day Tour, we usually recommend it for an Auckland to Rotorua Multi Day Tour, as there is so much to see in Rotorua itself.
Crossing the steep, densely forested Mamaku Ranges, we enter the Bay of Plenty and from the summit we catch our first glimpses of the shimmering blue waters of Lake Rotorua with bush-clad Mokoia Island at its centre. In the foothills, approaching the city of Rotorua we can take a short break at Mamaku Blue, New Zealand’s only blueberry experience. With its farm, winery and café, Mamaku Blue is a great place to learn about this very healthy little berry and its amazing journey, plus have a nice break and a cup of coffee.
In Rotorua we show you many highlights of this world-famous visitor attraction, including Rotorua itself, the lake front plus Government Gardens with the stunning Rotorua Museum. We continue on to the magnificent Redwood Forest, the Blue and Green Lakes and Lake Tarawera, with the dramatically beautiful and volatile volcano Mount Tarawera in the background. Mount Tarawera last erupted in 1886 and has been dormant ever since...until the next eruption...
We are also able to arrange additional activity options (at your cost) to cater for your particular preferences and abilities. They include:
- Te Puia – the New Zealand Maori Arts & Crafts Institute, where you can watch artists and craftspeople at work, stroll through galleries of exquisite taonga (jewellery, art, carving and weaving) and purchase beautiful individually crafted pieces.
- Whakarewarewa, a living thermal Maori village that is very interesting to visit.
- A visit to one of Rotorua’s Thermal Parks such as Wai-o-Tapu, Waimangu Volcanic Valley or Hells Gate, where you can experience the full might and majesty of this unique and spectacular volcanic landscape.
- A cruise to Mokoia Island, the sacred island and bird sanctuary in the middle of Lake Rotorua, where you can walk in the pristine bush, listen to the song of some of our shy native birds (and spot some of the cheeky ones) bathe in the hot pools and hear the story of Rotorua’s legendary lovers, Hinemoa and Tutanekai.
- Entry into Rotorua Museum, which not only holds some of New Zealand’s most fascinating collections but is also housed in the stunning old Victorian bath house in the centre of the beautiful Government Gardens.
- The Buried Village, where you can explore the remains of the Maori village that was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886.
- Skyline Gondolas, which will swing you up to the top of Mount Ngongotaha for a spectacular view and the Luge, which will spin you back down in a thrilling ride.
- The Polynesian Spa, on the site of one of Rotorua’s historic bath houses in the lovely Government Gardens, is also home to one of the world’s best spas, so here you can steep yourself in luxury and well-being as well as history.
- White water rafting on a variety of scenic and challenging local river courses.
- Agrodome, where you can experience all the magic of New Zealand farming, with a fascinating range of agricultural shows and displays, plus thrilling activities such as Zorbing.
We leave Rotorua at 5pm (again flexible depending on when we started our day together) to return you to your Auckland accommodation at about 8pm.
